BANGALORE : Fancied players advanced in the Wearhouse State-ranking badminton championship. Mohit Kamat took the young challenger M.D. Anup Kiran in his stride winning 21-11, 21-16 while V. Amar defeated Y. Sumeet 21-8, 21-7 in the men's singles semifinals. In the women's singles, Ruth Misha, weathered a late surge from Saumya Padhye and won 21-11, 25-23 to set up a title clash with Ashwini Ponnappa, who beat Monisha Vinayak 21-16, 21-9 in the other semifinals. Ajay Patil, who had earlier won the under-16 singles title, made his second final beating Venkatesh Prasad 22-20, 21-18 in the boys' under-19 singles semifinals. The results: semifinals: Men: Mohit Kamat bt M.D. Anup Kiran 21-11, 21-16; V. South wins title
D. Gurudev's stroke-filled 80 (5x4, 5x6) was the highlight of South Zone's seven-run win over West Zone in the final of the Simens inter-zone all-India cricket tournament played at Mysore on Saturday. Mr. Uppili, Head, HR, Simens All India Ltd, gave away the prizes. The scores (final): South 185 for eight in 25 overs (D. Gurudev 80, Nithin Adke four for 32) bt West 178 for four in 25 overs (Swapnil 47 not out, Sandeep Sapaliga 45).
Suchith shines
A fine exhibition of off-spin bowling by Suchith (7 for 33) enabled Canara First Grade College (Mangalore) score a six-wicket win over GMR Energy Ltd. (Panambur) in a pool F second division fixture in the KSCA Mangalore zone cricket tournament at NIT-K `B' ground, Srinivasnagar near Mangalore on Saturday. In another pool D second division tie played at NIT-K `A' ground, MESCOM (Mangalore) beat Avis Sunrise (Mangalore) by three wickets. A fine 79 not out by Prashanth P. enabled his side to a win with 11 overs to spare. The scores: second division: Pool D: Avis Sunrise 203 in 44.4 overs (Rameez 59) lost to MESCOM 203 for seven in 34 overs (Prashanth P. 79 n.o.). Pool F: GMR Energy 116 in 35 overs (Suchith seven for 33) beat Canara College 118 for four in 17.5 overs
Pruthviraj excels
A fine spell by left-arm spinner Pruthviraj (four for nine) helped SBRR Mahajana FGC register a big 138-run win over Sharada Vilas College and enter the semifinals of the Dr. K.L. Ramadas memorial Mysore city inter-collegiate tournament at the Maharaja's College grounds at Mysore on Saturday. The scores: Quarterfinals: SBRR Mahajana FGC 186 for five in 30 overs bt Sharada Vilas College 48 in 21.1 overs (Pruthviraj four for nine); Amrutha Vidhyalaya (Mysore) 71 in 20.2 overs (K.S. Arun four for 22) lost to TTL College of Business Management (Mysore) 73 for two in eight overs (K.S. Arun 46 n.o.).
BEL basketball trials
BEL Sports Club will conduct selection trials to choose players for its basketball team on January 18 at Dr. Amebdakr Stadium in Jalahalli. Those interested may register their names with Sports Section, Welfare Department, BEL on January 17 and report for trials on 18 with proper playing kits.
Tanvir wins
Tanvir Haque, (Div A), K.C Raju, (Div B) and M.N. Chaitanya (Div C) emerged winners in the three handicap divisions of the Mercedes golf tournament (southern leg) played at the Eagleton Golf Resort here on Saturday. The Mercedes Trophy, India is in its seventh year. The southern leg of the tournament had 80 golfers from Coimbatore, Chennai, Trivandrum and Kochi. The runners-up in the corresponding handicap divisions (A, B & C) were Indur Hirani, Rajiv Ahuja and Nithin Mandanna. All six golfers will play in the all India final to be held at Pune on February 24. The winners of the all India final will be flown to Stuttgart, Germany courtesy Swissair to participate in the Mercedes world tournament. The tournament was co-sponsored by Swarovski, Swissair and Mont Blanc. Other results: Closest to the pin: GS Ravi; Longest Drive: Sanjay Nadagouda and Straightest Drive: Vishal Bhat.
