READY FOR ACTION: A scene from Ee Rajiv, Gandhi Alla.
Ee Rajiv, Gandhi Alla (Kannada)
Director: Ravi Srivatsa
Cast: Vijay Raghavendra, Praveen, Shobraj, Vijay, Harish Rai, Nagashekhar, Rakshita, Pavitra Lokesh and Chitra Shenoy
Ee Rajiv, Gandhi Alla raises a set of questions on the rights and responsibilities of the judiciary, legislature and executive, and the press.
Questions
The tone and tenor of the questions the film raises appear as an attack on democracy itself, and it is intriguing to know whether the Regional Censor Board is exercising its responsibility?
Encounters
In order to make Bangalore a crime free city, the police frequently resort to encounters and this demoralises the press and public. The director is unable to elevate the theme to show the role that society can play in fighting evil. He even has a lengthy sermon by journalist Ravi Belegere as a postscript. Ironically, the sermon pleads for Gandhian values in public and private life, while the title of the film cries, "This Rajiv is not Gandhi". Despite its realistic narrative style, the film fails to sustain interest in audience owing to a thin storyline, borderline vulgarity, superficial characterisation and shabby editing.
Daredevil cops
The film is all about five daredevil cops attached to the City Crime Branch and their mission is to eliminate underworld elements at the behest of the city police commissioner. The film is a must for the police and press in the interest of professional ethics.
