National championships from Monday

Bangalore: The Jain Heights National billiards and snooker championship will commence at the Karnataka State Billiards Association (KSBA) Hall and the Bowring Institute Hall here on Monday.

On the opening day, qualifiers for the senior and junior billiards will be held.

"We have a record 500 entries and nearly 850 matches will be played in the championship," said S. Balasubramaniam, president, KSBA, at a press conference here on Saturday.

Real estate developers — Jain Heights and Structures Ltd. — will be the main sponsor of the event.

The country's leading cue sports players ranging from Geet Sethi to Pankaj Advani will lend sheen to this championship that returns to Bangalore after being held here last in 2000.

"We do have a long qualifier list and yes the logistics of having so many matches is tough. but then we believe in giving opportunity to more players and when many play, the real talent emerges.

"And invariably the champion players often emerge from the qualifiers," said S. Jairaj, secretary, KSBA.

The championship — that features senior and junior billiards, snooker, sub-junior billiards and snooker and ladies billiards and snooker events — will conclude on February 2.

The schedule:

Jan. 15 & 16: Billiards qualifying rounds; Jan. 17 to 23: Billiards main draw; Jan. 24 to 26: Snooker qualifying rounds; Jan. 27 to Feb. 2: Snooker main draw; Jan. 15 & 16: Junior billiards qualifying rounds; Jan. 17 & 18: Junior billiards knock-out; Jan. 19 to 21: Junior billiards league; Jan. 22 to 24: Junior snooker qualifying rounds; Jan. 25 & 26: Junior snooker knock-out; Jan. 27 to 29: Junior snooker league; Jan. 26 to 28: Ladies billiards; Jan. 29 to Feb. 2: Ladies snooker; Jan. 19 to 21: Sub-junior billiards and snooker.
