DINDIGUL : Infrastructure would be upgraded and sophisticated equipment provided at Oddanchatram taluk headquarters hospital at an estimated cost of Rs.2 crore, said R. Chakkarapani, Government Chief Whip and Oddanchatram MLA.

Inaugurating the `Varumun Kaapom' scheme at Oddanchatram near here on Saturday, he said that X-ray and scan facilities would be provided and bed strength increased to meet the growing demand for health care.

Besides, two primary health centres in the taluk would be upgraded to 30-bed hospitals shortly to treat more patients, particularly from rural areas.

The Government had granted permission for construction of hostels for backward class students at Oddanchatram, Keeranur, Idayakottai and Kallimandhayam.

A special Cauvery drinking water project, similar to the existing Cauvery drinking water scheme that has been supplying water to Dindigul municipality and six town panchayts and Natham taluk, would be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs.70 crore to solve crisis in Oddanchatram and Thoppampatti unions, he said.

This new scheme would ensure adequate water supply to several habitations in these drought-hit unions, the Chief Whip said.

A sum of Rs.15 crore would be spent on renovating damaged roads in the Oddanchatram constituency under various schemes funded by the National Agriculture Bank for Rural Development, he said.

The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Limited would construct a godown at a cost of Rs.25 lakh. Permission was granted for establishing a police outpost at Oddanchatram town, the Chief Whip said, and appealed to the people to utilise medical camps and prevent diseases at an early stage.

The District Panchayat Chairperson, Kavitha Parthiban, the District Rural Development Agency Project Officer, K. Ponnaiah, and others spoke.

Later, the MLA distributed welfare assistance to 121 pregnant women and mothers at the camp.
