Part of missile crashes on field in village

Staff Reporter

Basanaputti (Ganjam district): A 10-foot chunk of a guided missile, test-fired from the Army Air Defence College (ADC) test range at Golabandha, fell on a field in Basanaputti on Saturday morning, causing a scare among the villagers.

No one was injured, though some men were working on the field when the missile part fell.

Superintendent of Police (SP) R.K. Sharma, defence officials from the ADC and Chatrapur MLA N. Narayan Reddy reached the spot. Defence officials remained tightlipped on the incident. They said nothing could be said until a technical probe was initiated. Mr Sharma said some technical snag could have caused the incident.

A villager, C.H. Raghunath Reddy, said he heard a sound around 9.40 a.m. that shook the walls. The villagers saw a descending ball of fire. They sought compensation for a granary damaged in the accident.
