GOs on allowances

HYDERABAD: The Government has released orders sanctioning agency area/special compensatory allowances and HRA to its employees as per the new Pay Revision Commission 2005 scales.

Welcoming GOs 6 and 7, the Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation leaders Ch. Subash Chandra Bose and N. Narayana said each employee would get a benefit of Rs. 300 to Rs. 750 on implementation of the orders. - Special Correspondent

180 tortoises seized

KADAPA: Badvel Forest Range Officer P. Sivasankara Reddy and staff arrested two persons Viswanath and Marakondam of Chittoor district and recovered 180 tortoises being taken by them by Chirala-Bangalore bus on Friday night. The duo was taking the tortoises from Pamur to Madanapalle. They claimed that a person owing them money at Pamur requested them to hand over the bag containing tortoises to one Shyam at Madanapalle. A case was registered against the duo. - Staff Reporter

MRO suspended

KADAPA: Vontimitta Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) Sudhakar Reddy was suspended on the charge of resorting to irregularities in the third phase of land distribution. Basing on an enquiry report submitted by Rajampet Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Y. Ramachandra Reddy, higher officials issued the suspension orders. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

ANANTAPUR: Unable to find a livelihood, a debt-ridden farmer of Venkatampalli in Kothacheruvu mandal, Anjan Reddy (25), committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Friday. He was admitted to the General Hospital here and died while undergoing treatment on Saturday. His family had two acres of land and the farmer had sunk two borewells without any success. The family was facing difficulty in making ends meet. - Staff Reporter

One killed in attack

NIZAMABAD: One person was killed and another was seriously injured when residents of Alur village under Armoor police station limits attacked them with lethal weapons late on Friday night.

According to Sub-Inspector S. Srinivas Rao, the villagers beat up the duo with sticks. One of them Sailoo (48), died at the Government Hospital, Armoor and the second one Buchanna was shifted to the district headquarter hospital for treatment. The villagers alleged that the duo was involved in robberies. - Staff Reporter

Maoists kill ZPTC member

GUNTUR: Venna Bhaskar Reddy, ZPTC member of Karempudi mandal, was killed by Maoists, at Chinna Kodamagundla village late on Friday.

The Karempudi police said that a local action team of the Maoists opened fire from close range when Bhaskara Reddy was returning home. The police stated that three Maoists were involved in the operation, but Bhaskara Reddy's brother Venkararami Reddy, who sustained a bullet injury in the attack, said that six persons attacked them. - Special Correspondent

Two children die of food poisoning?

ADILABAD: Seven-year-old Pusham Usha and her three-year-old brother Ankush of Sangvi (K) village in Bela mandal died in the wee hours of Saturday apparently due to food poisoning. Seven other family members were hospitalised for food poisoning. The family members had partaken a ritualistic meal on the night of January 11 in connection with the death of an elder. All those who had eaten the meal complained of nausea and vomiting. - Staff Reporter

Lorry owners to go on strike

Kakinada: Lorries will go off the road from the midnight of January 19 as part of the nationwide transport strike, according to Datla Ramakrishna Raju, president of Kakinada Lorry Owners' Association.

In a statement here on Saturday, he said the AP Lorry Owners' Association and the All India Motor Transport Congress unanimously decided at the recent meeting to launch nationwide transport strike if the government failed to solve the tangle on the third party insurance by January 18. -Correspondent

Baptist churches' conference

Kakinada: The 52nd conference of north coastal Baptist churches (CBCNC) began here on Saturday. Beera David delivered the presidential address while T. Punnaiah Craig Immanuel, Baptist church pastor, attended as the chief guest. Chief Secretary M. John Thomas, election committee convenor Dasari Samuel, trust secretary N. Ruben, trust attorney Marella Prasada Rao spoke about the role of the church and its consolidation. -Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: In an accident between a truck and a jeep at Nellimarla on Friday night, Boddana Chinnaiah, 60, of Vallapuram village in Gurla mandal died. - Correspondent

Nagaradona reservoir gets sanction

KURNOOL: The Government accorded administrative sanction for construction of reservoir at Nagaradona in Aluru constituency of Kurnool district. The reservoir is estimated to cost Rs. 11.58 crores, which includes Rs 4.21 crores for land acquisition and Rs. 5.65 crores for bund building. The reservoir would irrigate 4,200 acres. — Special Correspondent

Cell phone shop burgled

KADAPA: Unidentified persons burgled Sri Sai Cellulars, a cell phone showroom in the municipal complex on railway station road here in the early hours of Saturday and decamped with cell phones and recharge cards valued at about Rs. 3.70 lakhs.

Red sanders seized

KADAPA: The Duvvur police intercepted an autorickshaw on Dasaripalle-Krishnampalle road in the mandal and seized 36 red sander logs being transported in it on Saturday. However, auto driver Veeranjaneyulu managed to flee, according to Duvvur Sub-Inspector Srinivasulu Reddy. Three Home guards made the seizure with the help of Maithri Sangham members. — Staff Reporter

Juvenile Board reconstituted

KURNOOL: First Additional Junior Civil Judge has been designated as Principal Magistrate of Juvenile Justice Board here in place of the Second Additional Magistrate, according to a press note.

Tejovathi, First Additional Junior Civil Judge, will head the Board. The reconstituted Board will speed up disposal of cases in order to comply with the time limit stipulated for disposal of cases.

Girl killed in accident

Madanapalle: A fifteen-year-old girl, Salma, was killed on the spot and 11 others were injured when the tractor in which they were travelling overturned at Horsley Hills recently. They were natives of Kota Veedhi of B. Kothakota mandal. The injured were shifted to Madanapalle Government Hospital. -Correspondent
