Karnataka keeps crown

BANGALORE: Karnataka retained the title in the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited all-India hockey tournament with a convincing 4-0 win over Jharkhand in the final played at the hockey stadium here on Saturday.

Ashok (19th) opened the scoring for the host and OE Thimmiah scored a minute before the half time whistle. Later in the second half Nazeem Bepari (50th) and M.A. Vinod Changappa (62nd) took the tally to 4-0.

In the play-off for the third and fourth places Orissa beat NTR Delhi 4-3 via the golden goal. The teams were locked 3-3 in the regulation time with Marshall Soren (8th & 39th) and Narayan Mohanty (33rd) scoring for Orissa and Naresh Kumar (21st), Sukhvir Singh (46th) and Premjit Kujur (58th) scoring for NTR Delhi. Peter Yess produced the match-winner in the 77th minute. — Special Correspondent
