LDF meet deferred

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The three-day meeting of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) State committee, scheduled to begin here on Saturday, was deferred following the death of veteran CPI(M) leader K. P. Aravindakshan in Thrissur on Friday.

The meeting would now be held on Sunday and Monday.

Two children killed

KOTTAYAM: Two children were killed and their mother seriously injured in an accident at Melukavu near Erattupetta on Saturday. Seventh standard student Aparna and her younger brother Abhijit, a fourth standard student, were killed on the spot when the autorickshaw they were travelling in collided with a jeep on the Muttom-Thodupuzha road. Their mother, Jayasree, has been admitted to a hospital at Thodupuzha.

Pilgrims hurt

SABARIMALA: Five pilgrims from Neeleswaram in Kasaragod district were injured, one of them seriously, when their jeep plunged into a ditch at Veluthode, near Chalakkayam, on the Mannarakulanji-Pampa main trunk road to Sabarimala on Saturday afternoon. The seriously injured pilgrim, Sojan (40), was referred to Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Sreenivas (23), Kunhikrishnan (25), Rajeevan (25) and Aneesh (23) were admitted to the General Hospital in Pathanamthitta.

AIDS victim cremated

THRISSUR: The body of an AIDS victim was cremated at the Lalur crematorium on Saturday in the presence of the police. The 18-year-old girl, who was an inmate of the Divine Retreat Centre at Chalakudy, died on Thursday. The court had ordered the Melur grama panchayat to receive the body and cremate it.

Rice, wheat seized

KOLLAM: Acting on a tip off, the personnel of the Vigilance wing of the Civil Supplies Department seized 300 sacks of rice and thirty-nine sacks of wheat reportedly hoarded at different places in Puthiyakavu in Karunagapally near here on Saturday. One Khalid has been arrested in connection with the seizures. The rice and wheat sacks had the seal of the Food Corporation of India. The seizures were made from Khalid's house and the houses of some of his relatives.

BSNL reduces broadband tariff

ALAPPUZHA: The BSNL has reduced usage charge of broadband in the district while increasing usage limit, BSNL Alappuzha general manager M. Haridasan said in a statement here. From January 1, the usage limit for subscribers of Home-250 plan has been increased to 1 GB from 0.4 GB. Usage charge for Home-250 subscribers has been reduced from Rs.1.40 to 90 ps. a MB. — Staff Reporter

Petition against officials

THRISSUR: The Public Interest Forum has filed petitions against District Collectors, the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police and the Member Secretary of the Pollution Control Board for allegedly not furnishing full information about cases charged under the Explosives Rules (1844), the Environment (Protection) Rules (1986) and the Noise Pollution Rules (2000). — Staff Reporter

Bags award

KOTTAYAM: C.G. Anumol, final-year B.Sc. Physics student at Baselius College here has won the Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme (GNSS) award, the highest individual honour for a National Service Scheme volunteer, for the 2005-06. Nominee of Mahatma Gandhi University, Ms. Anumol was selected from over 25 lakh NSS volunteers in the country. She has been selected for the innovative and unique community-centred Youth HRD projects she anchored as an NSS volunteer.
