HYDERABAD: Festivals are welcome breaks to change the monotony of routine life. And when a festival is celebrated the way it should be, with all the paraphernalia of age-old customs and traditions, it can be truly rejuvenating. Agreed, living in a metropolis, when a festival becomes yet another holiday to unwind and relax, how many of us can give it a real traditional touch even if we want to? So, for those who long to be in midst of traditional ambience, the Department of Culture is offering a rich fare `Sankranti Sambaralu' at the State Gallery of Fine Arts, Kavuri Hills on January 14. The programme will feature folk songs, dances, customary rituals like `Bhogi Pallu' for children, `Haridasu', `Gangireddulu', `Pagati Veshalu', etc. reflecting quintessential Telugu culture. For a taste of the actual Sankranti ambience and decor, along with traditional cuisine and games, one should head for Shilparamam, crafts village at Madhapur. Colourful muggulu (rangoli), folk traditions and rustic playthings like marbles, tops, `thokkudu billa', kite-flying are what one can indulge in.
