BERHAMPUR: Vigilance sleuths seized more than Rs 49 lakh worth of gold and silver ornaments illegally brought into the city without payment of entry tax during a raid on Friday night. They raided the rented houses of four gold and silver traders from outside the state at Badabazar area of the city. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police of Berhampur vigilance department Subash Chandra Swain, on a tip-off that large gold and silver ornaments were being brought into the city by traders without paying.
Ready to pay tax
Mr Swain said that three of the traders who had allegedly stocked illegally transported gold and silver ornaments for trading in Berhampur preferred to pay the entry tax with a penalty worth more than Rs 10 lakhs to take back the seized items. One trader is yet to pay up the tax and penalty worth more than Rs 2 lakhs. In December last year similar raids had led to unearthing of unaccounted silver ornaments worth more than Rs 2 crores from the Badabazar area.
