TAMBARAM: Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI) in Padur near Kelambakkam and Masterskill College of Nursing and Health on Friday entered into a memorandum of understanding on training of nurses in various departments, particularly in accident and trauma care. The memorandum of understanding was formally exchanged between Ananthi Alagappan, dean, CHRI and Edmund Santhara, chief executive officer, Masterskill College of Nursing and Health, Selangor, Malaysia. According to Mr. Santhara, it was the first time nursing students from any institute in Malaysia were sent abroad for advanced training. Till recently, the Nursing Board of Malaysia did not permit the practice. It was only after a team from the Masterskill College visited CHRI and learnt about the medical practices and problems faced by people, particularly in rural areas, did they decide to send their students. Subsequently, a team from the Nursing Board in their country inspected facilities available at CHRI and gave their consent for the programme. With 6,200 students, their institution was the largest training centre for nurses in Malaysia. Thirty nursing students commenced their 90-days training programme recently. Dr. Alagappan said 150 students were pursuing their first-year MBBS at the medical college. The hospital, with sophisticated equipment was started with a mission for taking quality health care at affordable costs to rural areas. They planned to increase the beds to 1,200 in a few years.
