Lecture on knowledge management

CHENNAI: Knowledge gained must be documented for corporate growth. Knowledge management was an emerging phenomenon determining the success of an industry in view of globalisation.

This was the bottom line of the 11th endowment lecture on `Knowledge Management for Competitive Advantage', hosted by the National Institute of Personnel Management, Chennai Chapter, on Thursday.

Highlighting the significance of knowledge management, A.K. Balyan, Director (Human Resource), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd., said the data acquired must be developed into knowledge and transferred to employees for industrial growth. Information technology-enabled tools such as the Internet played a crucial role in sharing and management of knowledge.

Discussing various models of knowledge management, he said to develop, identify, collect and organise must be the basic terms that constitute such a model. He underlined success models adopted by various organisations such as the U.K. post office, ONGC and British Airways.

B. Santhanam, managing director, Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd., spoke about the tremendous change in the Indian industrial scenario and technological advances. He said a disciplined approach to knowledge management was need of the hour.
