HYDERABAD: With work on Punjagutta flyover apace, the MCH has taken up reconfiguring of traffic rotaries of Monappa Island that has the statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and also that of former Chief Minister M. Chenna Reddy near NFCL junction.

Additional Commissioner (Traffic & Transportation) N.V.S. Reddy explained that while bigger rotaries were necessary to prevent accidents wherever vehicular flow was sparse, it became imperative to redesign the two rotaries considering the heavy movement of vehicles in the last few years.

City's showpiece

Both rotaries are located beside piers of the Punjagutta flyover, touted to become the showpiece for the city. Work has already been started for Monappa Island with the area around it dug to a specified extent and to be reinforced with concrete to take the load of vehicular movement.

This will soon have an elliptical shape rather than a round one. The shape of the NFCL Island too will be changed. The flyover will bifurcate into two arms before the statue - one dropping near the Jalagam Vengal Rao Park towards Masab Tank and another beyond Chutney's restaurant towards Jubilee Hills.

The MCH has shifted the statue of another former Chief Minister J. Vengal Rao from Greenlands junction near the foot of Begumpet flyover to a rotary near GVK One Mall on Banjara Hills on the request of the family members and also because of the Greenlands flyover being built adjacently.
