`Kolams', `rangolis' on January 14, 15

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has planned a slew of cultural programmes for Pongal celebrations in the city.

A three-km stretch on the Marina is set to turn colourful with `kolams' and `rangolis' on January 14 and 15, as the Corporation has announced prizes for the best designs.

Students can participate in the competitions, which will begin at 10 a.m., on both days. Prizes will be awarded on January 15. A renowned sand sculptor from Orissa has been invited to display his art on the beach. The Corporation and the Chennai Port Trust will jointly organise the show.

Important landmarks and bus routes in the city will be decorated with multi-coloured lights.

Competitions

Ripon Building, the Corporation's headquarters, will be whitewashed and adorned with serial lights. Two slum tenements in each of the city's 155 wards will also be brightly lit.

Music and literary competitions will be held at 19 places in the city. Self-help groups and voluntary organisations can take part in the celebrations.
