Staff Reporter

It is to mark Madras University's 150th year celebrations

  • 850 students from 70 universities likely to participate
  • A cultural rally will be taken out from Queen Mary's College

Chennai: The University of Madras will host a mega inter-university youth festival from January 21-25 to commemorate its 150th year celebrations.

About 850 students from 70 universities across India are expected to participate in the music, dance and literary events, Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran told reporters on Saturday.

This is the 22nd edition of the event, which universities take turns to host periodically. The Ministry of Youth Affairs promotes the festival for national integration.

T.R. Baalu, Union Minister for Shipping, has been invited for the inauguration of the festival on the university's Chepauk campus on January 21. A cultural rally will be organised from Queen Mary's College to the Madras University auditorium.

The competitions ranging from classical music and dance to collage and clay-modelling will be held at SRM Engineering College, Kattankulathur, beginning January 22.

The university has planned a `Daughter Universities' Day' and an `Affiliated Colleges' Day' later this year. "Madras University has about 15 daughter universities including Anna University and Bharathidasan University," Mr. Ramachandran said.

The university will bring out 150 books to commemorate the occasion. Both English and Tamil books will be brought out.

Some of the books are on the research done by the university's professors and scholars. Some out-of-print books would also be published.
