CHENNAI: A tsunami-affected teenager from Kalapakkam, a village near Pondicherry, will go on an all expenses paid cruise aboard a Swedish ship this month.

Gotheborg, modelled on an 18th century vessel of the same name, is set to visit Chennai as part of its international voyage for trade and friendship. The Swedish Government has invited R. Yuvaraj, a 19-year-old, to take the trip from Singapore to Chennai.

"I am excited but also nervous. I haven't travelled outside Tamil Nadu before," says Yuvaraj, who will fly on Saturday to Singapore, where the ship is docked. He was recommended by a non-governmental organisation working for rehabilitation of the tsunami-affected. Yuvaraj comes from a fisherman family. He is training to become a welding technician.

Rohaan Aftab Khatari, a 29-year-old businessman from Chennai, will also be a guest aboard the ship during the Singapore-Chennai trip. He said he had jumped at the opportunity for a sea voyage because he loved to travel. Actor-director Revathy has also been invited.

The ship is scheduled to start from Singapore on January 15 and reach Chennai on January 31.

The original East Indiaman Gotheborg was built in 1738 at Stockholm.

Traders made three lucrative voyages to China but the ship sank on the third return journey.

Almost 260 years later, a replica was built with traditional methods and raw materials such as oak and pine. Since October 2005, the new Gotheborg has been following the sea route taken by the original.

The ship will be open for visitors on some of the days it is berthed at Chennai.
