Sankranti shopping hits feverish pitch

Staff Reporter

While womenfolk and girls bargained with vendors over prices, men thronged the kite stalls asking `manjas' and new designs

HYDERABAD: With Sankranti just a day away, streets here are abuzz with shopping activity. The festive spirit was evident in decorated malls and garment shops showering discounts to lure the customers. The shopping spree reached its peak on Saturday.

But malls and showrooms apart, the pushcart vendors with Rangoli powders, those selling sugarcane, berry and other fruits used for customary `Bhogi Pallu' and makeshift kite stalls made good business. While womenfolk bargained over prices, men thronged the kite stalls asking `manjas' and new designs.

"Kite prices have gone up by nearly 50 per cent. So have manja prices but that does not seem to have impacted sales. Special Fida kites from Kanpur and they are selling like hotcakes", says Mohd.Iqbal, Badichowdi vendor.
