THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a day of solemn remembrance, a celebration of poetry. Students, friends and associates of eminent poet and critic Ayyappa Panicker came together to pay glowing tributes to the man who gave Malayalam literature a whole new dimension and breathed fresh life into it.

The day-long event held at the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan also marked the release of the 39th edition of Kerala Kavitha, a publication raised and nurtured by Panicker to encourage fresh writers. The current issue has been brought out as a memorial to Panicker and his contributions to the literary world.

Actor Murali, who was the chief guest at the commemoration meeting, spoke about Panicker's influence on his evolution as a stage artiste. In his speech sprinkled with lines from Panicker's poems, Mr. Murali recalled how the poet used to nurture young talent.

Kerala Kavitha editor M.M.Basheer said Panicker had always wanted the publication to be a launch platform for budding talent. Vishnunarayanan Namboodiri and M.K.Sanu also spoke.

Daliya Alavikutty, the youngest writer to be featured in Kerala Kavitha, released the annual edition by reading out her work titled `Changaatham.'

The function was followed by a review of the poet and his works and a Kaviyarangu. Delivering the keynote address at a cultural meeting held in the evening, M.V.Devan said Paniker's immense contributions to Malayalam literature and drama would be remembered for all time.

The meeting was followed by an enactment of Paniker's poems by Kaladharan and students of the Carmel School.
