REPAIR WORK ON: Workers repairing a pipe supplying drinking water to the city from the Aruvikkara reservoir, which developed a leak at Kummi on Saturday. Photo: C. Ratheesh Kumar
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The supply of drinking water from Aruvikkara to the Kerala Water Authority's (KWA) reservoirs at Vellayambalam, which was disrupted late on Friday, was restored shortly after 11.30 p.m. on Saturday. According to KWA officials the repair work was completed by 11.30 p.m. and trial pumping was started immediately. Normal pumping in the 1,200 mm line resumed soon after this. Soon after the leak was noticed in the Kummi-Irumba section of the pipeline on Friday night, the KWA had stopped pumping from the treatment plant at Aruvikkara. When the source of the leak was identified early on Saturday it became clear to KWA officials that a five-metre length of line would have to be replaced. Accordingly, a section of mild steel (MS) pipe was installed after cutting away the damaged section of the concrete line. Two pieces of the MS pipe were aligned and welded in the middle. The repair work took longer than expected.
