Regatta organised at Naval base

PROUD WINNER: J.S. Bedi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, presenting the Boat Pulling Regatta Trophy `The cock' to the winners in the city on Saturday.

KOCHI: The Kochi Naval base witnessed a keenly contested boat race in the Ernakulam channel in which six teams consisting of personnel from different naval units in Kochi participated.

Races were held in six categories to enable competition among various ranks.

Each team had a crew of six, including a helmsman.

The race was flagged off from the Venduruthy bridge.

Pulling away on 27-feet boats called `Whalers', the contesting teams displayed their fighting spirit to win the prestigious `cock', the traditional trophy.

Jagjit Singh Bedi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, was the chief guest.

INS Venduruthy wins

INS Venduruthy `A' team with 13 points won the regatta.

INS garuda `A' team was declared the runner-up.

The `Godavari' trophy was given away to the team comprising the Naval Aircraft Yard, Kochi, and allied aviation technical units for being overall first in sports during 2006.

`Best Spirited' trophy

INS Dronacharya retained the `Best Spirited' trophy for the fifth consecutive year.
