COIMBATORE: Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, a residential colony with about 250 houses near Sowripalayam, buzzed with activity on Saturday morning. Volunteers, students and residents joined hands to clean the streets in the colony, remove plastic waste and clear the garbage on roadsides. A couple of days ago, the Residents' Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) made a presentation to the residents of the colony on the Alagana Kovai Project. The project aims at encouraging residents of a locality to jointly keep their area clean and has so far covered about 25 areas in the city. Following this, the cleaning works started on Friday evening and continued to Saturday morning. Apart from the RAAC volunteers, members of women self-help groups and college students, employees of Astral Consulting Limited, a private company here, also joined the cleaning campaign on Saturday. The employees devoted a day every year to a community project and this year they had decided to work with RAAC, said a committee member of the association. The company also sponsored the leaflets on waste management, which was distributed to the residents. "We intend to involve more companies in the future programmes," said a committee member. About 150 dustbins were also distributed to the residents to segregate waste at source. The main problem in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar is plastic waste strewn around. "A lot of plastic cups and covers were lying around. We have appealed to the Corporation to ban use of plastic bags as done in Ooty," the member added. Explaining about the project, he said that the RAAC selected a locality and took up mass cleaning as a demonstration programme. This encouraged the neighbouring areas to come together and expand it to the entire neighbourhood, he said.
