SALEM: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam inaugurated the distribution of free LPG connections and gas stoves in the district at a function held here on Sunday.

Phased manner

Addressing the gathering, he said that the State Government would provide cooking gas connections and stoves to all eligible family cardholders in a phased manner. The selection of beneficiaries under the scheme was being carried out in a transparent manner.

He appealed to the beneficiaries to learn handling of stoves and LPG cylinders. "People should adopt safety measures while handling LPG cylinders," he said.

Schemes

Listing out various schemes implemented by the government, Mr. Arumugam said that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government was keen on improving the socio-economic status of the poor.

Later, the Minister distributed LPG connections and stoves to 1,000 beneficiaries.

Allotted

Presiding over the function, Collector N. Mathivanan said that the government had allotted 15,421 LPG connections and stoves to Salem district. All the LPG connections and stoves would be provided to the beneficiaries by March, he said.

The district administration was implementing a number of programmes through various departments to improve basic infrastructure facilities and enhance the quality of life of the people, he said.

Special medical camps were being organised in various parts of the district under the `Varumun Kappom' scheme, the Collector added.

Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini, District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, Salem Corporation Commissioner A.M. Selvam and senior officials were present during the function.
