This Day That Age
(there being no issue of the paper dated January 15) Prime Minister Nehru has commended to scientists a spirit of tolerance in their search for truth. Delivering his inaugural address at the 44th session of the Indian Science Congress in Calcutta on January 14, he sought the "sympathy and co-operation" of scientists in the great task of maintaining world peace, tolerance and compassion. He told scientists of 16 nations assembled on the occasion that in their journey to the temple of science they must remember that "this temple is essentially and should be one of tolerance, one of humility to the great truth which they are seeking to discover." They should realise that somebody else also might have a bit of truth and that they or for that matter no people or country had the monopoly of it. The scientists of today were "perhaps overlapping the borders of morals and ethics." A great deal of burden had fallen on them as their work in the midst of a world of conflicts had to be "fundamentally one of the basic rhythm of development." Dr. B.C. Roy, Chief Minister of West Bengal, who presided over the session, appealed to scientists to contribute their share towards the development of a human society "where man might live in peace and harmony with nature and with his fellow-beings."
