Protesters lathicharged

KOLKATA: Police fired in the air and resorted to lathicharge to disperse a group of protesters, who indulged in stone throwing and set ablaze two vehicles after a car hit three children at Jatragachi in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Sunday.

Some policemen suffered injuries, Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said. Ten persons were arrested. Police fired six rounds in the air after a mob vented its ire on the police and pelted stones at them after a car carrying picnickers hit three children who were crossing the road, Additional Superintendent of Police Dilip Banerjee said.

The protesters set ablaze the car involved in the accident and a police jeep and set up roadblocks. The children were rushed to a nursing home where the condition of one child was stated to be serious, police said. — PTI
