KOCHI: Muthoot ECC (Ernakulam) overcame Cordiant TCC (Tripunithura) by three wickets in the phase I final of the 20th KRL all-India cricket tournament at the KRL oval here on Sunday. Batting first Cordiant TCC aided by half centuries from Shinto (58) and Abhijith Menon (51) posted a respectable total of 200 for nine in its allotted 45 overs. C.M. Tejas (58) played responsibly and tailender M.P. Manu struck a useful knock (36 not out) to guide Muthoot ECC home. Muthoot ECC qualified for the main phase of the tournament. The scores: Cordiant TCC 200 for nine in 45 overs (Shinto 58, Abhijith Menon 51) lost to Muthoot ECC 205 for seven in 42.2 overs (C.M. Tejas 58).
Nirmal triumphs
Thrissur's former State champion E.P. Nirmal, with six points from seven rounds and a superior progressive score, won the men's title in the third RSC all-Kerala open chess tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kochi, on Sunday. The RSC secretary George Thomas gave away the prizes. The final placings (top three): Men: 1. E.P. Nirmal (Tsr, 6 pts), 2. G.S. Sreejith (Tvm, 6), 3. V.M. Jishore (Knr, 5). Boys: Under-16: Jithin Saji Issac, 2. Pareekshith Rama Varma, 3. K. Aswin Varma. Under-14: 1. R. Sandeep, 2. Dean John Devassy, 3. Ranjith D. Menon. Under-12: 1. U. Sangeeth, 2. Antony Devassy, 3. Sachith Varma. Under-10: 1. S. Adithyan, 2. S.L. Narayanan, 3. M. Arjun. Under-8: Suroop Krishna, 2. Hilmy Parvin, 3. S. Anand.
SBT `B' scores win
State Bank of Travancore `B' defeated Karamana Recreation Club by five wickets in the Canara Bank-TDCA `A' division cricket league at the Agriculture College ground, Thiruvananthapuram, on Sunday. The scores: Karamana Recreation Club `A' 186 in 41.5 overs (Jeet 40, Subin Sulaiman four for 30) lost to State Bank of Travancore `B' 187 for five in 37.2 overs (Sandeep 60).
Big win for Mavoor FA
Mavoor Football Academy thrashed Govt. Polytechnic 6-1 in the Videocon Kozhikode District `D' Division football league in Kozhikode on Sunday. Later, YCW beat Malabar Christian College2-1.
