Seven arrested

ANANTAPUR: The police arrested seven persons at Tanakallu mandal in the district on Sunday when they were allegedly betting on cockfight held traditionally during the Sankranti festival. Staff Reporter

200 saplings planted

NALGONDA: National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of the Government Junior College, Choutuppal, have planted more than 200 kanuga saplings during the winter special camp, College NSS unit programme officer Sunkara Ramesh said in a press release.

The camp that was inaugurated on January 7 would conclude at a meeting on January 16, he said.

Stipend for BC students

NIZAMABAD: Almost all eligible BC students applying for post metric scholarships are likely to get stipend and also fee reimbursement from the next academic year. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in principle has agreed for this, according to Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Rural Development, D. Srinivas.

Speaking to The Hindu over phone from Hyderabad on Sunday, the Minister said though it was very premature to provide specific figures of budget allocations for the BC welfare in the coming year the allocations could be much higher than the last year. -Staff Reporter

BRAOU convocation

HYDERABAD: The 15th convocation of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University will be held on January 18 wherein 10,414 candidates will receive their degrees and diplomas.

Vice-Chancellor D. Ram Chandram said the university would award 28 gold medals and five Ph.Ds. He said 20 candidates from various jails would also receive their degrees.

UGC Chairman Sukhdeo Thorat would deliver the convocation address while Chancellor and Governor Rameshwar Thakur would preside. - Staff Reporter

AISF plea

HYDERABAD: The State committee of the All-India Students' Federation (AISF) has asked the Government to reconsider its decision to recognise 107 minority B.Ed colleges after de-recognising them in view of last year's alleged `sale' of seats.

M. Vemayya, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Sunday criticised the Government for increasing the number of minorities B.Ed colleges to 116. - Special Correspondent

Quota for BCs sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes Welfare Association has sought 50 per cent quota for BCs in the Legislative Council elections.

R. Krishnaiah, president, in a statement here on Sunday said he had written to leaders of the Congress, TDP and other parties seeking a share for BCs in power. He pointed out that of the 294 legislators in the State, there were only 49 BCs and there was no representative among them from 83 communities. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Maharashtra Governor S.M.Krishna presented former Director of State Information and Public Relations Department C.V.Narasimha Reddi the `lifetime achievement award' in communications at a function in Mumbai on Friday. Eight trains to terminate at Dadar

HYDERABAD: Eight express trains will be terminated at Dadar station, from January 16 to 21, instead of Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai (CSTM), in view of the remodelling works being undertaken at the terminus, according to a press release issued by SCR. The trains are: 1020 Konark Express, 7606 Nandigram Express, 7058 Devagiri Express, 1006 Latur-Mumbai Express, 6012 Chennai-Mumbai Express, 6352/6340/6332 Nagarcoil Junction/Tiruvananthapuram-CSTM Express.

Train nos. 7605 and 1005 will terminate and originate from Dadar instead of CSTM. - Special Correspondent
