`Sangeetha Kalaratna' award presented to Krishnamurthy

BANGALORE: Vijaya College of Music on Sunday felicitated eminent musician H.V. Krishnamurthy with the `Sangeetha Kalaratna' award on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

H. Kamalanath, president of Bangalore Gayana Samaj, Mysore V. Subramanya, art critic, and Rama Seva Mandali also received the Sangeetha Seva Award in recognition of their service to the field of music.

Mridangam maestro Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman gave away the awards.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sivaraman praised Prof. Krishnamurthy and said that the latter richly deserved the award.

"Prof. Krishnamurthy is a multi-faceted personality who has done yeoman service to the field of Carnatic music and has also served remarkably in the medical field," he said. Prof. Krishnamurthy retired from the Bangalore Medical College and also taught at Vijaya College of Music.

A video presentation on the life and achievements of the awardees was presented by violinist H.V. Venkatram and Saralaya Sisters Kavita and Triveni. Director-General and Inspector-General of Police K.R. Srinivasan was present.
