Morcha demands changes in ADB pact

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha has asked the State Government to drop the `anti-people' conditions in the agreement between it and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Morcha State president K. Surendran said here on Sunday that the organisation would hold protest marches to urban local bodies in the State on January 22 to protest against the game of hide and seek being played by the LDF Government on the issue. The Government's repeated claim that it had not accepted any anti-people conditions put forward by the ADB was intended only to hoodwink the people, he said.

The Government, he pointed out, had not cared to come clean on the conditions that had been dropped from the draft agreement. People had the right to know the details of the agreement. His understanding was that the agreement still had provisions that enabled the ADB representatives to examine the files of the urban local bodies. Such provisions were against public interest and should be dropped immediately, he added.

Mr. Surendran said it was not sufficient for the CPI(M) secretariat to discuss the subject. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who claimed to oppose the agreement, should clarify which all conditions he was opposed to.
