Two girls among

three killed in fire

NEW DELHI: Three persons, including two minor girls, were charred to death and three others sustained burns in separate incidents of fire reported from different parts of the Capital on Sunday.

Around 2 a.m., a fire broke out in a Raghubir Nagar house in West Delhi. Rekha (23), wife of Harish, and her two-year-old daughter Khushbu were charred to death in the blaze.

In another incident, five-year-old Areefa was charred to death and her parents, Mohammad Hussain and Nasreen, and elder sister Nisha were injured when a fire broke out in their house at Khanpur in South Delhi around 8 a.m.

One arrested in murder case

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of one person, the Delhi Police on Sunday claimed to have solved a case of murder of an East Delhi-based businessman.

Kishan Mandal, 23, was arrested from Saraswati Vihar in North-West district of Delhi and an Italian-make pistol was recovered from him, police said.

Kishan, hailing from Bihar's Madhubani district had allegedly shot Arun Kumar Mandal, the owner of a dental lab in the Shakarpur area and fled on January 8.

Police claimed that Kishan had confessed on interrogation that he and two of his associates Sachin and Panditji had shot Arun in his lab after he refused to lend him money.

Man acquitted of dowry death charge

NEW DELHI: After a 10-year-long trial, a Delhi Court has acquitted a man and his brother of charges of murdering his wife and subjecting her to cruelty over dowry demands saying that the prosecution had failed to prove its case against them.

``The prosecution has miserably failed in proving that Leena (deceased) was treated with cruelty during her married life by the accused or that on August 22, 1997, she was murdered by pouring kerosene oil upon her and putting her on fire by her husband Ashok Sachdeva at the exhortation of her brother Mohan Sachdeva and father Jagdish Sachdeva (who is no more),'' Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar said.

Marathon meet on drugs awareness

NEW DELHI: To spread the drug awareness among young men, school students on Sunday took part in a marathon meet at the Delhi University ground here.

About 50 students from Delhi's three schools -- Remal Public School from Rohini, M M Public School and Maharaja Ugrasen Public School from Pritampura -- participated in the marathon meet.

Company asked to pay compensation

NEW DELHI: Terming the denial of mediclaim reimbursement on the ground of pre-existing ailment as ``highly pedantic and reprehensible'', the State Consumer Commission has asked an insurance company to pay Rs.24,745 as compensation including claim amount to a woman who was treated for ``pre-menopausal'' complications.
