BANGALORE: Panic gripped the residents of Visvesvaraya Nagar near Ambedkar Medical College following a blast reported in a house on Sunday. The incident occurred around 7.30 a.m. at the house of Hanif (36), who stays on the first floor of the building along with three persons. The front door was blown off and a portion of the iron grill on the portico fell to the ground in the blast. "I was sleeping in the room. The blast forced me out of bed," said Haseeb, who stays in the house next to Hanif's. The sidewall of Haseeb's house too was damaged. The blast damaged windowpanes of the house opposite Hanif's and the roof of a group of houses in Shalamma Compound across the road was blown. "We thought that an electric transformer had burst and rushed out of our houses. Then we saw Hanif (35) coming out of his house with burns on his body. Abdul Khader, Azgar and Rafiq, who had burnt their hands, followed him," Ramu, his neighbour, said. The police said a gas cylinder leak led to the blast. "We checked Hanif's house and the damaged portion of the other houses. The Forensic Science Laboratory personnel were also called in. We did not find any explosive material," Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) P. Muniswamy said. The blast occurred when Hanif switched on a light in the morning, he added.
