BANGALORE: R. Roshan Baig, Congress MLA, facing the wrath of the party's State unit leaders for signing the interim report of the Joint Legislature Committee on encroachment of government land in and around Bangalore, has taken up the matter with the party high command. Mr. Baig, who is also member of the legislature panel headed by A.T. Ramaswamy, Janata Dal (Secular) MLA, had signed the interim report by ignoring the instruction of his party leaders to desist from endorsing the report. It states that 13,614.37 acres of government land in and around Bangalore have been grabbed. The MLA, who met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders, including Defence Minister A.K. Antony, on January 10, has alleged that public opinion is adverse to the Congress' stand against the committee. In a memorandum to Ms. Sonia, Mr. Baig said that the committee had found that land worth Rs. 27,000 crore had been encroached upon. But it had not mentioned the name of any individuals involved in land grabbing, he said. Referring to the allegations made by the party's State unit leaders that he had not followed their instructions, Mr. Baig wondered how his action of signing the committee's report would damage the party's image. Mr. Baig told The Hindu on Sunday that the committee was serving a public purpose by exposing encroachment of government land.
