Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Under its project "Makkala Nethra Jyothi," ORBIS, a global non-governmental organisation, and the Bangalore West Lions Super-specialty Eye Hospital have conducted eye surgeries on about 500 underprivileged children in Bangalore and its neighbouring districts.

Of the targeted 1.5 lakh children below the age of 16 years, the project has so far screened nearly 90,000.

Doctors

The project partners told presspersons here that 207 doctors were also trained under the programme.

A Blind School Survey conducted in the State by the two organisations covered 24 blind schools to screen about 1,300 visually challenged children.

Among them, 100 were identified to have curable eye problems.

They were operated upon and given free care at the base hospital in Bangalore, the partners said.

Skills

During the five-day long "Hospital based Training Programme," Dr. Robert Walters from Cardiff Eye Unit, University Hospital of Wales, shared his skills in surgically managing different blinding eye conditions among children, while Dr. Anna Horwood from the University of Readford, U.K., trained paramedical staffand optometrists on the techniques to identify, examine and evaluate critical eye problems in children.
