CHENNAI: Speakers at a function held here on Tuesday underscored the need for concerted efforts at conserving petroleum products and providing a big push to the nation-wide mass movement. Inaugurating the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight 2007 activities (January 15-31) for Tamil Nadu, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu , stressed the importance of energy security. "It is the biggest challenge for responsible citizens to help in optimising the use of petroleum products. We need to have a multi-pronged approach in tackling this serious issue be it in the transport, industrial or the domestic sectors," Mr. Murali said. It was the duty of oil companies to eradicate adulteration. Lauding the efforts of the oil companies and the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) at creating and sustaining awareness among the people of the advantages of optimising the use of petroleum products, Mr. Murali said both the print and visual media had a pivotal role to play in supplementing the efforts of the Government and the oil companies. He released a booklet brought out by the PCRA and lit a traditional lamp to mark the inauguration of the OGCF activities. M. Nageswaran, General Manager, (Regional Services) Indian Oil Southern Region and Regional Level Coordinator for Oil Industry, Southern Region, said good driving habits, proper maintenance of vehicles, regular checking of tyre pressure and proper upkeep of boilers and conserving methods were some of the factors that weighed in favour of optimal use of petroleum products. He urged both the print and visual media to extend support in the form of news coverage to take the message to the unreached. Deepak Pandya, State Level Coordinator for Oil Industry in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, administered a conservation pledge. B. Gururajan, General Manager (South Zone), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Chennai, and R. Chidambaram, Senior Manager (Corporate Communications), Indian Oil Corporation, spoke. K. Jayaraman, Chief Manager, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, sought the support of the media in the several educative programmes planned for the fortnight.
