Bumper samba crop enthuses farmers all over the State
|
CHENNAI:
Pongal, the festival of harvest, was celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm throughout the State on Monday.
Farmers and agricultural workers in villages were more enthusiastic this time in celebrating the festival, thanks to the bumper harvest of samba paddy crop in most parts of the State. After a long time, the farmers reaped a successful second crop.
They had a bumper kuruvai crop in the previous agricultural season after three years of successive droughts.
Following Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's announcement that the festival would be celebrated as "Pongal for equality," heads of government departments throughout the State organised celebrations. Employees of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (Aavin) organised "Pongal for equality" in the Madhavaram, Ambattur and Sholinganallur dairy plants. Major temples organised community lunch. Rangoli competitions and sports events were conducted in many places.
The Thiruvalluvar day was observed on Tuesday when Ministers and leaders of various political parties garlanded his statues.
