Anand in joint second spot

NEW DELHI: A well-poised Viswanathan Anand could not prevent a draw through perpetual checks forced by Armenian Levon Aronian in the third round of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk ann Zee, near Amsterdam, on Monday.

The 32-move peace treaty left Anand and Aronian, like four others, with two points.

First-round leader Azerbaijan's Teimour Radjabov beat Alexei Shirov in 47 moves to lead with 2.5 points. Also, Ruslan Ponomariov stopped Magnus Carlsen in just 30 moves.

Negi scores win

Meanwhile, in Corus `C', India's Parimarjan Negi (2.5 points) scored his second victory in three rounds to move into joint lead. Playing white, the 13-year-old GM defeated Dutchman Thomas Willemze. Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi and Holland's Manuel Bosboom were the other leaders.
