Winning the grade to claim the arts fete trophy

WINNERS: The Kozhikode team which won the overall title in the State Schools Arts Festival in Kannur being accorded a reception in Kozhikode.

Anjali Sathyan is dancing on air these days. Like her teammates of Kozhikode district, which won the overall title at the State Schools Arts Festival at Kannur on Sunday.

When Anjali, a student of Providence GHSS, Kozhikode, stepped on to the stage of the Police Maidan at Kannur to perform in the Kerala Natanam competition on Sunday afternoon, she knew much depended on her. The difference between Kozhikode and Palakkad was just one point, with just one event — Kerala Natanam — remaining.

"I was feeling very tense as we needed an `A' Grade from Kerala Natanam to win the title," admitted Anjali. "I was, however, confident of making the grade. When the results were announced, I was delighted, and relieved, to learn that I had got an `A' grade; it felt great to contribute to Kozhikode's triumph. It was one of the happiest moments of my life."

Anjali, who also won an `A' Grade in Kathakali, however, regrets that she could not be part of the reception the Kozhikode team was given by the Kozhikode Corporation on Monday. Among those who led the procession in the city on Monday was Thanusree Reghuram, who scored `A' Grade in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattom and Group Dance. "I felt extremely proud at the reception," said the student of St. Joseph's Anglo Indian GHSS.
