24-hour yagnam

TIRUCHI: The Sringeri Sath Sangh will organise a 24-hour non-stop Lalitha Sahasranama Akanda Parayana Yagnam at the Srirangam Sankara Mutt premises, commencing at 6 a.m. on Friday (January 19) and culminating at 6 a.m. on the next day. Arrangements for boarding and lodging have been made at Sringeri Vidhya Bharathi Bhavanam.

One killed in car-cart collission

PUDUKOTTAI: One person was killed and eight more, including seven children, were injured in a car-bullock cart collision near Kavinadu on Monday. M. Pazhaniappan (56) and the children were returning in a bullock-cart from Sendamangalam after offering worship at a temple, when the accident took place. The car was proceeding to Karaiyur.The Tirukokarnam police have registered a case and are investigating.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 91.95 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 482 cusecs, and the discharge 8,017 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Two persons drown in tank

Nagercoil : Two persons drowned while taking bath in a tank near Kulasekaram on Monday.

According to sources, Auxilin (7) along with her grandmother, Lordhu, went to the tank to take bath.

Meanwhile, she fell into the tank. On seeing, her grandmother tried to save her.

As Auxilin caught hold of her grandmother's sari, she could not swim and hence, both of them drowned. The police recovered the bodies.

Pension `adalat'

MADURAI : The Postal Department has proposed to conduct a regional-level pension `adalat' at the office of the Postmaster-General, Southern Region, Madurai, during the last week of February.

Postal service and family pensioners can represent their grievances or complaints, if any, related to unsettled pension claims.

Two copies of the representations should be sent to the Postmaster-General, Southern Region, Tamil Nadu, Madurai, 625002 on or before February 2, 2007. — Staff Reporter

Three arrested

ERODE: The Erode town police on Tuesday arrested three persons on murder charge. According to police,

the parents of Senthilkumar of VVCR Nagar, lodged a complaint with the police that their son was missing since December 24. The police arrested Raja employed at a TASMAC shop. He confessed that Senthilkumar after consuming liquor demanded free eatables. He also said that Abdul Hasan and Akbar Basha murdered Senthilkumar and threw the body into the Kalingarayan canal. The police also arrested Abdul Hasan and Akbar Basha. They have been remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is on. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Erode, C. Murugan, informed in a press release on Tuesday that the divisional-level Dak Adalat (Postal Grievances) and pension adalat of Erode Postal Division will be conducted on January 19 at 11 a.m. at the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices office, Erode.

NAMAKKAL: A cyclist was killed on the spot when a mini lorry hit him in Valaiyapatti near here recently.

Farmers' welfare board set up

CHENNAI: The State Government on Tuesday set up a 17-member Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers-Farmers Welfare Board with Revenue and Law Minister I.Periasamy as its chairman.

The members are: K.P.Ramalingam, Bhudalur Kaliyamurthi, Keezhanur Rajendran, L.K.Sadagopan, K.Balkrishnan, V.Duraimanickam, S.Sellamuthu, and Ponkumar (non-official members) and Secretaries of Revenue, Finance, and Agriculture departments, Commissioner of Revenue Administration, Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, Commissioner, Sugar, Commissioner, Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business, and Commissioner, Land Reforms (official members). — Special Correspondent

NMR trains to resume on January 20

Coimbatore: Traffic between Mettuppalayam and Udhagamandalam on the landslip-battered Ghat section in the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) will resume on January 20, Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Vargheese said here on Tuesday. Talking to reporters along with the Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, A.K. Harit, Mr.Vargheese said the damage owing to the November 2006 landslip was heavy.

As part of restoration works, 35,000 cubic metres of earth and boulders had been removed. Because of hostile and inaccessible terrain, restoration works proved not only laborious but also time consuming since all the materials had to be moved through the railway line after clearing the sections stage by stage.

Restoration works had almost been completed at a cost of about Rs 1 crore. — Staff Reporter

CPI(M) demands re-poll

CHENNAI: The State secretariat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday reiterated its demand for re-poll for all the wards of the Chennai Corporation, where "irregularities" were committed during the local body elections.

Party's State secretary N.Varadarajan, in a statement here, referred to the split verdict given by a two-judge Bench of the Madras High Court and recalled that the party had already made it clear that elections were not conducted in a democratic manner in many wards. The CPI(M) also filed a case in the High Court in this regard, he added. — Special Correspondent

Film awards selection panel set up

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has announced the selection committee members for the 2005-06 Tamil Nadu Government Film awards and 2004-05 and awards for 2005-06 students of Tamil Nadu Film and Television Training Institute, Taramani. An official release here said that Justice S. Mohan will head the selection committee. The other members are: S.P. Muthuraman and Amirtham-Directors, Sivakumar, Charuhasan, Y.G. Mahendran and Thyagu-actors, A. Natarajan, former Director of Chennai Doordarshan Kendra, Mu. Mehta-Poet, Deva-Music Director, Sripriya-actress, the Principal of the Tamil Nadu Film and Television Training Institute, N. Ramesh, and Sukumar-Journalist. — Special Correspondent
