CHENNAI: Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan on Monday appealed to Tamil scholars, writers and publishers to spread the message of Tamil sage Tiruvalluvar, whose work was based on humanism. Shortly before handing over the awards and citations to 31 authors and 29 publishers of Tamil books at a function to mark the `Tiruvalluvar Tirunal,' Mr. Anbazhagan said Tirukkural showed the way for humanity to choose the path of righteousness, acquire wealth for serving society and lead a joyful life by sharing the fruits of peace and harmony with others. It was Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E.V. Ramasami, who popularised Tirukkural, which was a guide to life. Tiruvalluvar's work had won the acclaim of several scholars from abroad, he said He presented cash prize of Rs.10,000 to each author and Rs.2,000 to the publisher. He also handed over the orders for a monthly assistance of Rs.1,000 to 16 veteran Tamil scholars. Minister for Information Parithi Elamvazhuthi said the second day of the Tamil month `Thai' was being observed as `Tiruvalluvar Day' since 1970. Secretary (Tamil Development) D. Rajendran and Director (Tamil Development) M. Rajendran highlighted the features of the Tiruvalluvar Day celebrations.
