  • Government urged to re-introduce ban on online lottery
  • Demand to launch a universal rationing system

WOMAN POWER: Women activists belonging to NFIW staging a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Belgaum on Tuesday.

BELGAUM: Women activists under the banner of National Federation of India Women staged a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioners Office and demanded a ban on sale of arrack and online lottery system. They want a scientific and judicious policy towards universal rationing system for distribution of foodgrain to families here on Tuesday.

State president of the federation Parimala Vijaykumar, Milan Rajput, Meera Madar and representatives of other women organisations in the city led the demonstration.

The federation said the Government should completely prohibit sale of arrack. Stringent measures should also be taken to stop illicit liquor, as women and children were the worst affected.

The Janata Dal (S)-BJP coalition Government should impose a ban on arrack immediately, it said. Similarly, several youth and poor people were being lured by online lotteries all over the State and country. If this licensed gambling was permitted, the governments are only putting at risk the future of the younger generation.

The Government should re-introduce the ban on the online lottery system as well.

Drawing attention towards the Public Distribution System in the country, the federation said the present system was not fair and proper.

It divided people as BPL or APL, as many APL families have availed yellow cards meant for BPL families. The Government should review the public distribution system and introduce a universal rationing system.
