On Palkhivala

January 16 marked Nani Palkhivala's 87th birth anniversary. Throughout his life, Nani championed the cause of free enterprise, defended constitutional liberties, and advocated the cause of human rights. Of the many landmark cases he so tirelessly fought for the common man, he will be remembered the most for persuading the Supreme Court to accept the basic structure doctrine in the Keshavanand Bharati case. Those who knew Nani will surely admire the recent verdict which reiterates the doctrine and forcefully emphasises the value of fundamental rights and judicial independence. Let us thank him and resolve to follow the principles he stood for.

A.V.K. Mohan,
