Video row

This refers to the controversy triggered by the telecast of an objectionable video of a man dressed as Gandhi by two news channels. That the video was made by a person of Indian origin is shameful. Even more shameful is the fact that our own television channels aired the film for public viewing.

Ashok Shah,
Bangalore

I saw the video by Gautham Prasad where he prances about vaguely resembling Gandhi. Whether it was funny or tasteless, it was innocuous. It was neither an attack on the Mahatma nor on India. Why has the nation been reduced to such readiness, even eagerness, to be offended and incensed? The threats of violence against the young man and the official condemnation are all too grim, disproportionate, and miss the point. Gandhi would never have taken the matter so seriously.
