Dindigul lifts S.A. Naidu memorial shield

Sattur: Dindigul lifted the S.A. Naidu memorial shield, dethroning Chennai 4-3 via penalty shoot-out in the final of the 48th State senior inter-district football championship at Sattur on Monday.

At regulation time, the teams were locked goalless.

In the penalty shoot-out, Babu, Gautham, Charles and Rajesh Raja scored for Dindigul. Baskaran, Rajmohan and Jeyaseelan were on target for Chennai.

Mr. K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, Minister for Health, gave away the prizes.

Mixed bag for Chennai

Chennai had mixed fortunes in the senior inter-district volleyball championship at the VOC Stadium, Palayamkottai, on Monday.

Chennai won the men's title, defeating Salem 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-9, 16-14, while it lost to Kanchipuram 21-25, 15-21, 13-25 in the women's final.

Men Final: Chennai bt Salem 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-9, 16-14.

Third place: Coimbatore bt Madurai 25-21, 19-25, 25-23. Semifinals: Chennai bt Madurai 27-29, 25-14, 25-16, 25-22; Salem bt Coimbatore 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 17-15.

Women (Final): Kanchipuram bt Chennai 25-21, 25-15, 25-13. Third place: Coimbatore bt Tirunelveli 18-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21.

Semifinals: Chennai bt Tirunelveli 25-14, 25-14, 25-12; Kanchipuram bt Coimbatore 25-13, 25-15, 25-20.

Four in lead

Top seed Ram S. Krishnan and three others — Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF, S. Nitin (Salem and P. Phoobalan of SRM College, Chennai — are in joint lead with 5.5 points each, at the end of the sixth round of the SGKNKM FIDE-Rated chess tournament at Dindigul on Tuesday.

Aparajith shines

An unbeaten half century by B. Aparajith helped Tiruvallur defeat Kancheepuram by seven wickets and entered the final of the ICL-Mahavirchand memorial Trophy inter-district under-13 cricket tournament at the ICRC ground, Sankarnagar, on Tuesday.

Cosmo CC in final

Host Cosmo CC entered the final of the TDCA-Lions Club of Theni Mullai Trophy cricket tournament, defeating Shri Ranuga Textile Mills CC juniors by six wickets at Theni on Tuesday.

The scores (semifinals): Shri Renuga Textile Mills CC Juniors 105 in 24.3 overs (Pandeeswaran 47, Prabu four for 20) lost to Cosmo CC 106 for four in 16 overs (Kanagaraj 45 not out); Sanford CC, Andipatti 172 for nine in 25 overs bt MKU College, Andipatti 135 for nine in 22 overs (Hari 51).
