Chennai: Sultan Azlan Shah and Tansri P. Alagendra were re-elected as President and Secretary respectively at the Asian Hockey Federation Congress held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Azlan Shah retained his post unopposed. Alagendra defeated Pakistan's Mudassar Asghar by a margin of 34 votes to 10. Qazi Magsood Rauf of Pakistan, who contested for the post of Treasurer against the incumbent, Fumio Ogura of Japan, lost 8-36. India's K.P.S. Gill and Vidya Stokes, Presidents respectively of the men and women federations, won comfortably as Vice-Presidents gathering 39 and 45 votes each. South Korea's Shin Bark Jae (46) and Japan's M. Ueda (39) retained their positions as Vice-Presidents. The Congress approved India's proposal for an Asian-level competition in the first week of September in Chennai. It also decided to promote indoor hockey in a big way, and endorsed two tournaments, one in Iran and the other in Macau this year. Efforts are being made to establish a federation in Qatar after the successful conduct of the hockey discipline during the Asian Games in Doha.
