CALLOUS CROWD: People thronging the Marina pay no attention to the notice board displaying the number of deaths in the previous years.

CHENNAI: The city is bracing itself for `Kaanum Pongal' on Wednesday.

Like the previous years, lakhs of people will be on roads, crowding beachfronts and destinations such as Children's Park, the Vandalur zoo, the Trade Fair grounds.

The city police plan to deploy 5,000 personnel to regulate the surging crowds at various points on Wednesday. On Tuesday evening, the police got busy especially in areas around the Marina, where large crowds gathered. Personnel from the law and order and traffic wings on Tuesday began moving to vantage points.

Police said bathing in the sea off the Labour statue would be prohibited. On Tuesday evening, many people entered the waters, despite the presence of a warning board that highlighted the number of lives lost.

Commissioner of Police Letika Saran in a statement on Tuesday said severe action would be taken against persons who indulged in eve teasing or other illegal acts. The police are closely watching the movements of people who had just come out of prison. She cautioned people to take care of their valuables and their children in the crowd.
