Derecognition: schools to move High Court

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Unaided Schools Association has decided to file a writ in the High Court against the State Government's order derecognising schools violating the State's language policy.

Association president P. Prakash told presspersons that the order violated the fundamental right of parents to determine the course of their children's education.

The parents of the derecognised schools planned to hold a dharna in front of the Vidhana Soudha on January 25, when the legislature session begins.

While admitting that the managements had violated the undertaking they had given to the Education Department saying they would run Kannada-medium schools, Mr. Prakash demanded to know how the officers who had allowed this to go on went unpunished.

Arguing that the derecognised schools were "catering to the poor people whose hope of mobility was through English", he asked if the existing schools would "meet the increasing demand for English schools."

S. Sunita, a member of the association, said the school managements were in a fix since they could not make admissions for the coming year.

The department derecognised 2,000-odd schools during the second week of September 2006 for violating the language policy of 1994.
