BANGALORE: A large number of children took oath on Tuesday to help conserve petroleum products at the inauguration of the Oil and Natural Gas Conservation Fortnight here. They pledged to shoulder the responsibility of educating people so that unproductive and wasteful use of petroleum products is avoided. S. Venkatesan, an office-bearer of the Petroleum Conservation Research Association, which organised the programme, led the children in taking the oath. Repeating after him, the children said they would strive to ensure that the supplies of scarce resources last long. Sanjay Malhotra, Senior Regional Manager (Retail), HPCL, gave several tips to the children and urged them to communicate them to their parents. Mohamed Sanaulla, Secretary, Ecology and Environment, said Indo-Norway Eco Clubs were being promoted in high schools and pre-university colleges. Funds were being sanctioned to them to carry out their activities. He urged the students to develop ownership attitude towards environment. He said bio-fuels were an effective alternative to the fossil-based energy and pointed out that President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had urged the States to raise jatropha plants. V.K. Jayachandran, State-level Coordinator, Oil Industry, Karnataka, spoke.
