Gandhi peace prize for Tutu on January 31

NEW DELHI: Archbishop Desmund Tutu, a South African cleric and anti-apartheid activist, will be conferred the Gandhi peace prize 2005 by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam here on January 31.

A champion of human rights and democracy, Archbishop Tutu was selected for the prestigious award by a jury, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in September last. A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in October 1984, Archbishop Tutu has consistently worked for reconciliation among all parties involved in apartheid through his writings and lectures at home and abroad.
