HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu has appealed to the Government not to uproot the poor in the name of taking over assigned lands. Talking to a group of poor people who came from Terlapally in Medak district and submitted a memorandum to him on Tuesday, Mr. Naidu said the party would stand by them. Earlier at a press conference, TDP leaders -- N. Janardhan Reddy and M.V. Mysoora Reddy -- said going by the delay in taking over the assigned land surrendered by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Government seemed to be making attempts to restore it to his family. Revenue Minister, D. Prasada Rao's recent comment that there was no assigned land in 310 acres surrendered by Dr. Reddy, has strengthened this suspicion, they said and alleged that two different yardsticks were being adopted one for the poor and amother for influential persons.
CPI(M) echoes TDP
Echoing Mr. Naidu's line, the CPI(M) State Committee asked the Government to spare the poor. Expressing concern over the acquisition of the land, in possession of poor and middle class in the name of special drive to resume the assignment lands, the party alleged that the Government's stand in resuming the assignment lands was raising several apprehensions. In a letter addressed to Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao on Tuesday, State secretary B.V. Raghavulu urged the Government to withdraw its move. The Government should, in turn, take steps to regularise assignment lands that had been bought by the poor and middle class families, he noted.
