PLANNING AHEAD: BJP State president Bandaru Dattatreya releasing the party's diary in Hyderabad on Tuesday. PHOTO: SATISH H.
HYDERABAD: State BJP president B.Dattatreya on Tuesday urged the Government to set up a committee for monitoring the release of floodwaters through Pothireddypadu head regulator in the wake of the controversy over enhancing its discharge capacity. At a press conference here, he called for evolving a mechanism to bear out the Government's claim that only floodwater would be discharged. He sought a white paper on the issue. He demanded immediate announcement of a comprehensive water policy to assuage doubts among people of the three regions and recalled Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy's promise to disclose the policy in May last. Lack of scientific evaluation on the quantum of flood and assured water coupled with "hasty" decisions by the Government were giving rise to suspicion.Mr. Dattatreya said the party's `chintan baithak' would be held here on January 24 and 25. It would discuss steps to strengthen the organisation and formulate an action plan for taking up agitations on Government "failures".
Protests
The party cadres would hold dharnas/protest programmes in revenue divisions, mandals and at Collectorates on January 18, 19 and 20, demanding nine-hour power supply for agriculture. On January 18, they would demonstrate in Telangana region protesting against "double standards" of the Congress on the second SRC. Meanwhile, in an "open letter" to Dr. Reddy, Mr. Dattatreya demanded a white paper on the issue of assigned lands and regularisation of plots and lands purchased by the poor. He sought takeover of lands held by the rich for distribution to the poor.
