HYDERABAD: The Kadapa District Selection Committee (DSC) scam is getting murkier and bigger. It is now becoming clear that the amount involved is more than Rs. 3 crore and not Rs. 1 crore as was made out initially! More than 100 candidates are alleged to have paid anywhere between Rs. 3 lakhs and Rs. 5 lakhs in the form of fixed deposits to four teachers who doubled up as middlemen in the recruitment fiasco.
OMR sheets tampered
A preliminary inquiry by the district Collector revealed that the optical mark reader (OMR) sheets of the candidates were tampered with to pave way for their selection. Though the Government has dismissed Deputy District Educational Officer and registered criminal cases against those involved in the scam, including the four teachers, there are questions on the role played by higher officials of the School Education Department here. "These officials have not acted when the sealed covers from Kadapa containing the OMR sheets were deposited two days late," a senior official says. There are no convincing answers as to why the armed escort could not prevent tampering of the OMR sheets. Investigating agencies are probing the alleged involvement of some more persons, including a former teacher.
From single family
Selection of four candidates from a single family has raised suspicion among the aspirants who have lodged a complaint with the authorities. The police are looking into a complaint that some of the selected candidates gave blank answer sheets. Another issue that prompted the probe was selection of an over-aged candidate who had never qualified in successive DSC examinations.
Apartment sealed
Meanwhile, the police reportedly sealed the apartment and other immovable properties of an accused person valued at around Rs. 40 lakhs in the State capital. The Government is planning to prosecute 46 candidates, who allegedly paid the bribe amount, and debar them from writing future DSC tests.
